Kicking banana tress is one of the training techniques conceived by teachers of the old. It is to develop kicking skill. There are two ways of training by this method; kick with full power, will develop power, toughening the shins, and to maintain the sharp edge of the shins. Kicking to keep the tree trunk remain in the up right position - stand a banana tree trunk vertical to the ground and kick with either leg and keep the tree trunk remain standing up. The defensive aspect of Pahuyuth training is the Pong-Pad-Pid-Perd (to block, to swipe to cover, to open). Teachers would hang lemons at about neck high. The students would have to hit the lemons with their fists, elbows and defend themselves with the defensive techniques. The students would have to be able to strike, block, attack, defend, and move in the master gesture with great agility. This training technique is considered to be most ingenious method by teachers of the old that has passed on to younger generations of Muay Chaiya practitioners.

In Chaiya style of fighting, elbows are short weapons designed to be used at close range. They are the dexterous weapons of Muay Chaiya. The elbows would be moving back and forth, up and down close to the face, making the face well covered and at the same time, allow the fighter to be able to launch his own attack with great power and speed. It is difficult to attack a skillful Muay Chaiya fighter, because the fighting stances and movements of Muay Chaiya always prescript elbows to be close and move to cover his entire body. They are like a durian fruit (a tropical fruit with hard and spiky skin). One can sustain injury unto oneself by hitting the spiky durian fruit.

One Inch Punch Documentary

-UFC and the OIP (one inch punch)-

Something I've heard over and over here is the fact that the OIP is not being used in the UFC. That is true but as Cameron said in the interview, you can't just view the one inch punch as a trick or a fancy fight ender. You will never find your opponent standing still waiting to be hit as you get in your stance. The possibility of actually using the OIP are slim but the concept of striking in a short distance is what we should focus on.

I'm sure you guys can think of a better example in the UFC but let's take a look at Tito Ortiz. He's mounts on top of Shamrock and he clinches onto Ortiz. What is there to do? He delivers short elbows. I'm not saying these are "one inch" elbow hits but the concept of delivering a heavy blow in a short distance is applied here. I'm also not saying Ortiz worships JKD, Bruce and so on, but I do believe all good fighters usually apply this concept to combat when needed.

It's been a year since I released this video and I am truly amazed at the amount of views it have gotten. I enjoy all the comments even stuff like this..."Bruce Lee paid that black belt 500 yen to fall like that." Thank you all for watching. I will try to do more updates and discuss about the OIP. I found this video on http://www.wingchun.com.au/ It has some really awesome demonstrations. The full video is available there, but I borrowed a few parts and slowed them down. There are some excellent clips of what Wing Chun is capable of in the right hands.

There's a kicking demonstration, followed by Sifu Jim Fung's chum-kiu and one inch punch(!) and Sigung Chu Shong Tin's demonstration of Wing Chun stance by standing on one leg on top of a mahjong piece.

I personally found the 'Whoa!' at the end of the one inch punch video to be quite funny.

All in all some great demonstrations. I'll have to see if I can find more videos from this school

Tony Jaa practice some incredible move for fighting and chasing scenes in Ong Bak Movie and also show some ancient form of Muay Boran (the predecessor to Muay Thai)

Tony Jaa's Training: "My master used to be an actor and a director. I learned from the sets of the movies of my master and I would work on the sets, everything from being a waterboy. Then I went on to study at a physical education university where they taught every type of martial arts and sports." Now, Jaa trains "8 hours a day. I wake up five to six a.m., run about 10 kilometers, then do a warm-up and go over all the moves of Muay Thai. Then gymnastics for flexibility."

Tony Jaa's Style: "I love Muay Thai and love any form of martial art. Muay Thai is able to show Thai culture and provide entertainment as well in its clearest form. The main part of Muay Thai is using the knees and the elbows. And the culture and the heritage that goes into Muay Thai is different from other martial arts. The incorporation of gymnastics into Muay Thai where I do a backflip and kicks... make Muay Thai seem prettier."

Muay Thai in Film: "Muay Thai hasn't been used in any films that we've seen and I wanted to bring that Muay Thai to films for people to know it and as a Thai person, that's important. It's different in the way they present the martial arts, but all martial arts have the same basis of being part of nature and the way they present themselves and the way they name the different types of moves. Like Muay Thai, we put an emphasis on the knees and the elbows, whereas Wushu, they name their moves after animals."

Real Action in Ong-Bak: Ong-Bak, Tony Jaa's first film, showcases Jaa's natural abilities without special effects or wire enhancements. At a time when even Jackie Chan is using wires, Jaa felt "I want to make it seem realistic and for viewers to see that it is possible to do those stunts on your own." This includes a chase scene where Jaa runs along the tops of people's heads. "It's hard," Jaa said. "You have to practice until you're used to it." And the people below? "They're okay with it."

Tony Jaa Goes One on One in Ong-Bak: To make each one on one fight scene look unique, "It depends on the person. I look at the character. A more fierce person, I put more fierce character into it. Or the Japanese guy who does a lot of footwork, we would do more Muay Thai sequences into that." Jaa also picks up props and fights with them. "The image of Jackie Chan is already there, and Jackie Chan is my inspiration but sometimes picking up those props and working them into the film just fits in better." (more)

Kru (teacher) Preang, was the close student of Kru Thong Chuer-Chaiya, who had inherited the Muay Thai Chaiya from the Grand Master Ketr Sriyapai (the last grand master of Muay Thai), who had learned from his father, Phraya Wajeesatayarak, the provincial governor of Chaiya. The Grand Master also learned from another 13 masters until he was well versed in MuayThai.

Muay Thai Chaiya, not only utilizes fists, feet, knees, and elbows as we commonly see in the main stream Muay Thai, but also uses the forgotten elements of throwing, pressing, grabbling or clinching and joint breaking (Toom-Tup-Jub-Huk), they are no less dangerous than the throwing and joint locking of other martial arts. There are other sets of techniques with names that rhyme and contain deep meanings. They are to lure, to mislead, to elude, to avoid, to deceive, and to tease (Lor-Lork-Lop-Leek-Lorklor-Lorlen), or to hug, to squeeze, to swing the opponent from side to side, and to cast or throw the opponent down (Kod-Rad-Fad-Wieng). These are the techniques for inside fighting, that we no longer see in today’s Muay Thai. Even the way to fall, to get up, to roll on the ground, and to crawl (Lom-Look-Klook-Klan), which deal with proper way of rolling on the ground and falling so the practitioners wouldn’t get hurt.

So, an exponent of the old and traditional Muay Thai, such as Muay Thai Chaiya, does not limit oneself to only one-dimensional fighting of stand up strike. If the fight takes one down to the ground, one still has to be able to fight effectively. Since the old traditional Muay Thai was created for the engagement in battlefields, being able to engage with several opponents at the same time has made Muay Thai Chaiya so formidable.
